MILLION MILE AWARDS - ACKNOWLEDGING THE ACHIEVEMENT

SEPTEMBER 21, 2016 EDIT

I hope everyone is Safe and Healthy. I would like to inform the membership of the Million Mile Award Program the Post Office has in place. The program eligibility is you, or one of our brothers and sisters has 30 years of service and has not had an MVA accident. The National Safety Council will give you a plaque and a pin. The District Manager has granted your office permission to order Million Mile Jackets.

When everything is in place the NALC Leadership, Business Agent- Bill Luciani, President - Randy Zebin, Vice President- Joe Rodgers, Chief Steward/Treasurer Tim Mulvenna will attend. Along with the Postal Service District Manager Chu Falling Star, the Postmaster, and other leadership. We call the local media and at times it has made the news.

This program is a positive event to all the hard working letter carriers. We are out there in rain, snow, sleet or hail and extreme heat. This is one of the most physical and at times mentally challenging jobs there is today! For our Letter Carriers to achieve this milestone this award is well deserved. If you or one of our brothers and sisters has not received this award, please call the union hall.

I am proud to say that NALC 157 members have received the most awards in the area.

Thank you,

Safety

(September 01, 2015)

Hope everybody had a Safe and Healthy Summer. Over the summer we held Safety and Driving Refresher classes for the CCA'S. Our union leadership, President Randy Zebin, Vice-President Joe Rodgers, Secretary-Treasurer Geary Wertz, The Manager of Safety Carla van Istanbul, Driver Instructors and the Safety Task Force conducted the class.

The class was to refresh the CCA's on the procedures they were taught in the academy. To let them know we have a job to do, but we must do it in the safest way possible. We told them if they have any safety issues, to report them to their supervisor, union steward, safety captain or call the hall if needed. We do not want anyone to put themselves in danger to get the mail delivered.

We went over driving practices that we deal with on the street, we taught them how to protect themselves from a dog attack, how to avoid broken steps, how to use safe park points, etc. We gave out mailbags, dog spray and shoulder straps. The class was interactive so there was a lot of discussion on situations that occur during our delivery. We taught them the safest way to get the job done. It was very informative for all who attended. Our Safety Team is trying to eliminate some of the hurdles we have to deal with on the job. We would like everyone to go home safe and healthy.

THIS IS DOG AWARENESS WEEK, AND WE WERE ASKING THE COMMUNITY TO HELP US DELIVER THE MAIL TO THEM SAFELY. THIS EVENT IS TO BRING AWARENESS TO OUR CUSTOMERS ABOUT THE ISSUES WE FACE EVERYDAY DELIVERING THE MAIL TO THEM.

LETTER CARRIERS HAVE BEEN ATTACKED,

THREATENED, BITTEN AND UNFORTUNATELY EVEN HAVE DIED FROM DOG ATTACKS.2014 National Dog Bite Week 025

THESE PICTURES ARE CARRIERS AT NORTH PHILLY WHO HAVE BEEN BITTEN BY DOGS IN THE LAST YEAR. THEY ARE WEARING BANDAGES REPRESENTING THE AREA WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN INJURED. LETASHA HALL WAS BITTEN FROM BEHIND BY A STRAY DOG, SHE HAD TO RECEIVE RABIES SHOTS. JUAN ARROYO WAS BITTEN FROM BEHIND,THE DOG PUSHED THE STORM DOOR OPEN. VINCENT BESCRIPT WAS BITTEN FROM BEHIND ALSO. THE DOG WAS HIDING IN BETWEEN TRASH BAGS.

ALL WE ARE ASKING IS FOR IS THE CUSTOMERS TO KEEP THEIR DOG IN THE HOUSE OR RESTRAINED WHILE WE ARE DELIVERING THEIR MAIL.

IF YOU SEE A STRAY OR ABANDONED ANIMAL PLEASE CONTACT ANIMAL CONTROL. THIS IS A GREAT PROGRAM THAT SHELTERS DOG'S AND OTHER ANIMALS AND PUTS THEM UP AT FOSTER HOMES AND UP FOR POSSIBLE ADOPTION. WE ALL LOVE OUR PETS THAT'S WHY THIS PROGRAM IS FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR LETTER CARRIERS AS WELL AS OUR PETS.
